Tim Jackson

Tim Jackson is professor of sustainable development at the University of Surrey and director of the newly-awarded Centre for the Understanding of Sustainable Prosperity (CUSP). Funded over five years by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), CUSP aims to explore the moral, cultural, social, political, and economic dimensions of prosperity on a finite planet. Tim currently also holds an ESRC Professorial Fellowship on Prosperity and Sustainability in the Green Economy (PASSAGE). He has been at the forefront of academic work on sustainability for over two decades and has undertaken numerous advisory roles on the social and economic dimensions of sustainability for business, government, civil society, and inter-governmental agencies. Between 2004 and 2011, he was economics commissioner on the UK Sustainable Development Commission, where his work culminated in the publication of Prosperity without Growth – economics for a finite planet (Routledge 2009/2016), which received wide acclaim and was subsequently translated into seventeen foreign languages. He was awarded the Hillary Laureate for exceptional international leadership in 2016. In addition to his academic work, Tim is an award-winning dramatist with numerous radio writing credits for the BBC.
