Christy Respress is executive director of Pathways to Housing DC, which implements a “housing first” strategy in which homeless people, including those with mental health or addiction challenges, are given a place to live with no preconditions and no requirement to “graduate” from the housing. Once housed, participants are offered supportive services. Stable, supportive housing is merely the first step towards reintegrating into their community, rebuilding family relationships, reconnecting with their faith fellowships, and experiencing an improvement in overall physical health and psychological wellbeing.
